Modern Credit Cards come with a security measure known as the CVC/ CVV number
- CVV stands for Card Verification Value, where as
- CVC stands for Card Verification Code
With Visa and Mastercards the CVV/CVC number is 3 digits. With Amex cards the number is 4 digits long.
Reasons for the Numbers.
The verification code was introduced primarily to prevent credit card fraud. As the popularity of the credit card grew so did the fraud associated with it. The most common type of fraud are purchases made with a credit card without the owner of the card knowing it. This became especially rampant when online stores (amazon.com / e-bay.com etc) started to pop up on the internet.
Just having the Card Number is not good enough anymore. When an online transaction takes place you will need to provide the CVC/CVV number in conjunction with the name as it appears on the card as well as the credit card number itself. There by enhancing the security of the card holder.
Finding the CVC/ CVV number on your Credit Card:
- Look at the back of your Credit Card. With American Express cards this is on the front
- On the right hand side on or next of the signature strip you will see 3 or 4 numbers.
- Congratulations you’ve found the your CVC / CVV Number
